From Friends, To Family

The Beginning: A First Friend, A Lasting Bond

In 2020, Ms. Lydia joined the Bright Beginnings family as an evening care teacher. She could not have known then that one small connection would grow into something life changing.

When Ms. Lydia’s daughter Denise started evening care in 2022, a little boy named Travis was the very first friend Denise made. Travis was outgoing, playful, and full of personality. He transitioned easily into the classroom, quickly meshing with the other children. Ms. Lydia was his first teacher — but at the time, she was simply doing what she always does: creating a warm, welcoming space for every child who walks through the door.

Their connection didn’t happen overnight. It grew in quiet, meaningful ways. Ms. Lydia remembers the moments that first signaled trust: whenever Travis was upset, he would come straight to her. When tears fell, he sought her arms for comfort. Even as a toddler, he recognized something safe and nurturing in her presence.

That was the beginning.

Building Trust, One Moment at a Time

Like all strong relationships, theirs was built in the small, everyday moments.

Through one-on-one time, conversations, and simple encouragement, their bond deepened. The more Travis gravitated toward Ms. Lydia, the more she leaned into supporting him. Eventually, that connection extended beyond the classroom, with visits over the weekend and time spent together as families.

There were challenges along the way. When Travis became overwhelmed, he sometimes struggled to regulate his emotions, even banging his head when he was upset. But instead of seeing challenging behavior, Ms. Lydia saw a child who needed guidance. She intentionally created a safe space by talking with him, uplifting him, and teaching him how to express his feelings in healthier ways.

“Just communicating with him and encouraging him in his moments made the difference,” she reflects. “Uplifting him best supported his emotions.”

Over time, those lessons took root. Lydia began forming a relationship with Travis’s parents before he even turned one. Around his first birthday, a foundation of trust had already formed. His parents appreciated knowing there was someone who cared deeply and sincerely for their son — someone who made them feel safe leaving him in her care.

The connection unfolded organically. There were no grand speeches or defining conversations. It was visible in Travis’s joy when he saw her and in the way he asked about her when she wasn’t around. His parents saw what their son felt.

Shortly after his first birthday, a beautiful exchange took place. In a heartfelt conversation, Travis’s mother asked Ms. Lydia to become Travis’s.

Lydia was elated.

“No one had ever asked me to play this role,” she says. “It pushed me to be a better person and a better mother.”

Watching Him Grow

Today, Travis is four years old — funny, confident, outspoken, and deeply loving. Ms. Lydia has had the privilege of watching him grow emotionally and socially.

While he has always had confidence, she has seen it become more refined. He is now better able to express his feelings, his needs, and his wants. He talks more. He shares more. He steps into rooms with assurance.

Consistency has played a powerful role. From evening care until now, Ms. Lydia has remained a steady presence in his life — another trusted adult in his corner, guiding and encouraging him.

And in the process, Travis has changed her, too.

“This relationship has pushed me to want to be more,” Ms. Lydia says. “To be a better role model. Not just for him, but for all my students.”

One memory still makes her smile: their first family cruise together in 2023. What began as teacher and student had grown into something much deeper — a shared family experience filled with laughter and joy.

More Than a Title

Being Travis’s godmother is more than a title for Ms. Lydia.

“It’s like I’m a second mother to him,” she explains. “He knows I will always be there for him. I always got him.”

Family, to her, now means something even deeper — showing up through tough times, staying committed, and loving unconditionally. This experience has strengthened her purpose, not just as an educator, but as a woman, a mother, and a role model.

“You never know who is watching,” she reflects. “You never know the impact your interactions have — especially with our kids.”

The Power of Evening Care

At Bright Beginnings, evening care is more than extended hours. It is relationship-building at its most intimate. With smaller group sizes and intentional connection, teachers are able to nurture bonds that feel like family.

Ms. Lydia believes this story speaks to the power educators hold.

“Just talk to the kids,” she encourages other teachers. “They have a lot of feelings. It’s important to try to understand them.”

Children are navigating big emotions in small bodies. Sometimes, all it takes is one adult who listens.

A Message for Travis

If Travis reads this one day, Ms. Lydia wants him to know:

Godmommy is always here for you. No matter what.
I will always be here and with you.
We will always do things together as a family.

In one word, Ms. Lydia describes their relationship as strong

What began as a teacher comforting a crying toddler has become something extraordinary — a reminder that when we lead with love, consistency, and compassion, we don’t just teach children.

We become part of their story.

And sometimes, they become part of ours forever.
