About the BBI 5k

In Washington, DC 3,000 children are in foster care; 1,800 children under the age of five are homeless; and 35,000 children live in homes where the next meal is uncertain. Bright Beginnings, Inc is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 to provide childcare and other vital services to homeless families in DC. Since then, more then 2,500 homeless families have been served by the Bright Beginnings program. Bright Beginnings’ annual 5K Race raises funds that help provide educational, therapeutic, health, and family services free of charge to homeless infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families in Washington, DC. All proceeds directly support our outstanding programs that prepare children for kindergarten and help their parents get back on their feet. Frequently Asked Questions

What time does the 5K race start?

The official 5K race begins at 8:00am. The Stroller Brigade will start at 8:05am.  

What time does the race finish?

The course roads will reopen to drivers at 9:30am. However, most participants are finished before that.   

Can I bring a stroller?

Yes, but due to safety concerns, strollers are not allowed to line up alongside runners. Please participate in the Stroller Brigade, which will begin immediately after the official 5K, at 8:05am.

Can we bring a pet?

Yes, but due to safety concerns, pets are not allowed to line up alongside runners. Please remain in the very back of the pack for your own safety, and remain to the right hand side of the course as you run or walk.

What is the registration deadline?

There is no registration deadline.

Why are there additional fees added to the registration fees?

Bright Beginnings does its best to keep the costs associated with the 5K as low as possible, so that the funds raised from the event can contribute directly to the critical education, therapeutic, and family services that it provides to homeless children and families in Washington, DC. The additional fees are the costs associated with the registration process, and are kept as low as possible.

Can I register for more than one person?

Yes. If registering a group of individuals that are not participating on a team, please register them and yourself all at once.

Is there a family discount?

No, there is no family discount.

Do I need to pay for my baby?

Yes. Any participant, regardless of age, must be registered for the race. Cheering from the sidelines is free of charge and encouraged!

Is there a place to keep our bags?

Yes. There will be a bag check on at the Start/Finish area.

Where is the course posted?

Is the course certified?

Yes.

What is the terrain of the race course like?

The course is flat and entirely paved.

Can children participate in the race?

Yes. We are a family friendly event and encourage child and family participation! Participants of any age can participate in the official 5k race as long as they are registered.
